Causes of Depression: Depression has three major causes. These three causes are: Biological, Environmental, and Gender.

Both men and women have the causes above, however there are certain risks that only men or women can have.
Biological Causes of Depression:
- Physical changes of the brain- When someone is depressed, part of their brain shows less activity than someone that doesn't have depression
- Neurotransmitters- A disruption of the chemicals serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the nervous system is thought to be a cause of Depression
- Hormones- Changes in hormones can trigger depression
Environmental Causes of Depression:
- Death of a loved one
- Loss of a job
- Financial troubles
- High stress situations
Both men and women have the causes above, however there are certain risks that only men or women can have.
- Pregnancy- Women are more prone to experience Postpartum Depression. However, some men have shown to have it as well.
- Menopause: Changes in hormones that has the ability to cause Depression in women.
- Low testosterone levels: Men with low testosterone levels have a bigger chance of getting Depression.
